What's New
- NRC provided notices of intent to prepare Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) and hold public scoping meetings for the following COLs:
- Callaway on February 18
- Nine Mile on February 25
- NRC held a public meeting on February 3 to discuss the supplemental EIS for the North Anna COL application, NUREG-1917.
- Luminant and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries announced a joint venture February 2, 2009, to develop Comanche Peak during the period preceding issuance of a COL.
- NRC suspended reviews of Entergy's COL applications at River Bend and Grand Gulf on January 12 in response to the applicant's request to consider alternatives to the ESBWR design.
- Westinghouse and Shaw Group signed an EPC contract with Progress Energy January 5 for two AP1000 units in Levy County, Florida.

Nuclear Power Loan Guarantees
- The Department is authorized, until September 30, 2009, to guarantee $18.5 billion in loans for nuclear power projects. First NRC COL approval not expected before December 2010, beyond current authority period—authority extension needed to keep program viable.
- Fifteen power companies have submitted Part II applications by the December 19, 2008 deadline, requesting a total of $93 billion in loans to be guaranteed. The applications cover 10 sites with a total of 16 reactors, capable of providing 22 GW in generating capacity.
