Department of Energy to Co-Sponsor Workshop on Nuclear Power Plant Life Extension R&D

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), and the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) will co-sponsor a “Second Workshop on U.S. Nuclear Power Plant Life Extension Research and Development” planned for February 22-24, 2011, in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. The initial Workshop, co-sponsored by NRC and DOE in February 2008, focused on the technical issues that may need additional research efforts to support safe long-term operations (LTO) in the second, and subsequent, license renewal periods. (report available Here).

This Workshop will review the accomplishments to date, discuss ongoing LTO activities, and consider the remaining gaps that need additional attention. A draft agenda, with NRC, DOE, and NEI points of contact, will be published in November 2010. The Workshop will be open to the public on a space-available basis.
