International Working Group Meeting Focuses on Nuclear Power Infrastructure Development and Needs

VIENNA, Austria – The multi-nation Infrastructure Development Working Group (IDWG) of the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP) held its sixth meeting on May 26-27, 2010, in Vienna, Austria. The two-day event included workshops on nuclear energy regulatory agency engagement and the infrastructure needs for international nuclear fuel service frameworks. Officials from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the U.K. Nuclear Decommissioning Authority co-chaired the working group meeting.

“As a key component of the international Global Nuclear Energy Partnership program, the Infrastructure Development Working Group focuses on the safe, secure and responsible use of nuclear energy,” said Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy Warren F. “Pete” Miller, Jr. “The group’s work includes the identification of areas of common interests and concerns, recommendations for practical measures to be taken, and the further sharing of information.”

More than 15 countries were represented at the meeting and workshop, with over 60 participants from GNEP member governments and observers, international agencies, the nuclear industry and professional associations.

Participants discussed infrastructure requirements for international nuclear fuel service frameworks as part of a safe and secure approach to the peaceful use of nuclear energy around the world. Other IDWG meeting highlights included presentations of topical papers on areas of interest in radioactive waste management, discussions regarding countries’ interest in small modular reactors, and continued discussions on nuclear energy financing issues.

Participants also reported on human resource development activities, including experiences and new opportunities in the IDWG exchange program for educators and professionals, and application of the IDWG human resources modeling tool.
