Blue Ribbon Commission on America’s Nuclear Future

Mr. Paul A Murray

Mr. Murray has 30 years experience working in the nuclear industry. Initially based in Europe, working on all aspects of the nuclear fuel cycle including, reactor systems design/refit and design, research and development, commission of modern used nuclear fuel recycling facilities. Transferred to the U.S. in 1996 to support a government to government memorandum of understanding to transfer nuclear technology from the United Kingdom to the U.S. in support of DOE Environmental Management mission. Experience includes performing as a senior consultant on programs at Sellafield and Dounreay in UK, with SOGIN in Italy and AECL in Canada. Recently joined AREVA as the technology manager for the industrial studies for recycling in the U.S.

AREVA (2007 to Present)
Technology manager responsible for reviewing technology readiness levels for Gen IV reactors and advanced recycling technologies. Prepared detailed technology development roadmaps to support the necessary R&D programs to implement recycling and adopt the advanced technologies under development by the National Laboratories. Worked closely with major national and international corporations and acted as a liaison point with the National Laboratories and the DOE.

Key Technology Development and Deployment Projects (1996 to 2007)
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) – Responsible for the concept design of skid mounted equipment to remove and consolidate waste from legacy storage tanks at the ORNL. Following successful testing numerous systems were deployed to empty and close a wide variety of diverse waste streams in storage tanks across ORNL. Transferred this technology to Idaho National Laboratory (INL) where it was deployed on numerous high activity waste tanks.

Savannah River Site (SRS) – Responsible for the concept design and testing of sampling systems for the million gallon tanks at Savannah River that were built and deployed into tank 48 at the site. Conducted numerous studies for the mixing and retrieval of million gallon tanks, the removal of solvent from process tanks and the destruction of organic sludge using sodium peroxide

Hanford – Worked as a consultant to all the M&O contractors on the Tank Waste Remediation System and later Waste Treatment Plant as a consultant to review and propose technology solutions to the process issues with the proposed design of the facility.
