Blue Ribbon Commission on America’s Nuclear Future

Dr. Andrew C. Klein

Andrew C. Klein is Professor of Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Health Physics at Oregon State University and has served in that position since July 1996. Dr. Klein was on-loan as Director of Educational Partnerships at the INL in Idaho Falls, Idaho, from March 2005 to September 2009. During that time period he also served as Visiting Professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Klein served as Head of the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Health Physics at Oregon State University from July 1996 to March 2005. From October 2002 to March 2005 he also served as Director of the Oregon State University Radiation Center. From August 1993 through October 2002 he was Director of the Oregon Space Grant Program. He has been at Oregon State since September 1985 serving as an Assistant Professor at Oregon State from September 1985 to July 1990, Associate Professor from July 1990 to July 1996, and was Visiting Assistant Professor of Nuclear Engineering at the University of Cincinnati from August 1983 through August 1985.

Professor Klein received his B.S. in Nuclear Engineering from Pennsylvania State University in 1977. He completed his M.S. in Nuclear Engineering and his Ph.D., also in Nuclear Engineering, from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1979 and 1983 respectively.

His research interests include space nuclear reactor systems design and thermal management, analysis of nuclear power systems, radiation shielding, nuclear nonproliferation technology, and fusion energy systems design. He has been an author on more than 80 technical publications.

Dr. Klein is registered as a Professional Engineer (Nuclear) in the State of Oregon and is a member of the American Nuclear Society, the Health Physics Society, and the American Society for Engineering Education. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the American Nuclear Society from June 2000 to June 2003 and the Board of Directors of the National Space Grant Alliance, Inc. from January 2001 through October 2002, and as a founding Regional Director of the Ultimate Players Association was co-author of the Association’s original bylaws in 1979. He was a member of the U.S. Department of Energy's Nuclear Energy Research Advisory Committee from 2001 to 2005 and chaired subcommittees on world-class national laboratory definition, nuclear engineering education, and space reactor development. He was a member of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Space Science Advisory Committee from 2003 to 2006.

In April 2006 Dr. Klein received the Outstanding Engineering Alumnus award from the Pennsylvania State University for his distinguished career and exemplary leadership abilities and in April 2004 he received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Wilson High School in West Lawn, PA. In September 1998 he received the Loyd Carter Award from Oregon State University for outstanding and inspirational teaching. Dr. Klein is a member of the Advisory Committee for Nuclear Technology since 1997 and an Advisory Editor for the Annals of Nuclear Energy since 1996. He was a member of the ABET, Inc. Engineering Accreditation Commission and the Board of Directors of the Idaho Falls Symphony Society from 2005 to 2009.
