Welcome to our website.
President Barack Obama has challenged us with ambitious goals for a clean energy economy. Among these are to produce more energy here at home, to invest in the next generation of energy technologies, to break our dependence on foreign oil and to help put the brakes on climate change.
Nuclear energy is an important part of America’s clean energy strategy.
- Today 104 nuclear power plants provide about 20% of our electricity without emitting greenhouse gases.
- Over 70% of our low-carbon electricity comes from nuclear.
- In the coming decades, a wave of new nuclear power plants will increase America’s energy security without contributing to global warming, while creating thousands of new high-paying jobs.
Our job at the Office of Nuclear Energy is to manage the research and development of nuclear energy to make it even more valuable in achieving America’s energy goals.
On this website, you’ll find information about such subjects as:
- What we’re doing to make existing reactors last longer
- The development of future reactors with enhanced safety, efficiency and economics
- Research that will make nuclear waste less radioactive and more manageable, and many other aspects of our activities in the Office of Nuclear Energy.
One of our greatest challenges is to find new approaches and strategies for managing spent nuclear fuel. We’re fully engaged in this effort and confident that we can build upon existing knowledge to develop safe, acceptable alternatives to current practices.
We hope you will find the information on our Website to be useful, informative and easily accessible.
