Dr. Gail Marcus was recently named principal deputy director of the Department of Energy's (DOE's) nuclear energy programs. In particular, she will provide leadership and focus to the department's nuclear energy research and development programs, isotope programs, and the management of DOE's reactor facilities. Marcus also will be responsible for the development of next generation nuclear power plants, advanced nuclear energy technologies, including advanced radioisotope power systems and production and distribution of isotopes required for medical treatment, diagnosis and research. Dr. Marcus joins DOE after 15 years in senior management positions at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, including four years as a senior advisor to former Commissioner Kenneth Rogers. Most recently, Dr. Marcus was assigned to the Tokyo Institute of Technology as a visiting professor of the research laboratory for nuclear reactors. As a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, with an undergraduate and graduate degree in physics and Sc.D. in nuclear engineering, Marcus is the first woman in the U. S. to be awarded a doctorate in nuclear engineering. She is a Fellow of the American Nuclear Society. - DOE -
