Overview of the I-NERI Program
The International Nuclear Energy Research Initiative (I-NERI) is designed to foster collaborative research and development (R&D) with international partners in advanced nuclear energy systems and nuclear fuel cycles. I-NERI collaborations allow the United States to engage the international community in bilateral cost-shared R&D that enhances the Department’s ability to leverage its research capabilities with nuclear technology funded by other countries. At the same time it provides the United States greater credibility and influence in international activities associated with the application of nuclear technologies. The program addresses key issues affecting the future use of nuclear energy and its global deployment by improving cost performance, enhancing safety, increasing proliferation resistance, and improving the waste management of future nuclear energy systems.
I-NERI supports scientific and engineering R&D that is closely linked to the principal research programs sponsored by the Department of Energy, Office of Nuclear Energy (DOE-NE):
Current collaborative research and development I-NERI projects exist with the Republic of Korea and the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom).
